The lyrics can be found here.
..
The song opens with drummer girl introducing the beat. The guitar enters and quickly takes the lead, with some dramatic sliding, before subsiding into a definite melody with a strong drum backing. There is one last showy descending scale before the solo is handed over to the singer.
Hoshizora miage Watashi dake no hikari oshiete
Anata wa ima doko de Dare to iru no deshou?
Look up at the starry sky and tell me about my own light
Where are you now? And who are you with?
Hirano Aya’s tone disturbs me. It’s so…..forceful, yet rich and full at the same time. Like being punched by cream. She also uses some vibrato, which startled me, since this song is very rock-y.
I am also confused by the lyrics. Is it just me, or do they really not suit the song? If I hadn’t heard the song before and looked at the lyrics, I would think that it was a slow, sad song similar to Eternal Snow from Full Moon wo Sagashite. In feeling, anyway. But it’s actually……this…..I’m sorry, I don’t know how to describe it.
Tanoshikushiteru koto omou to Samishiku natte
Issho ni mita shinema hitorikiri de nagasu
If I think about enjoying things, I feel sad
I weep all by myself at the movie that we saw together
Actually, she does sound quite sad at this point. More hurt/upset/angry than sad/weepy/lonely, though. I think that the fast, loud drum beat and also major key are the main causes for creating a feeling that is inconsistent with the lyrics, because the melody line is appropriately long and drawn-out in itself.
Daisuki na hito ga tooi
Toosugite nakitaku naru no
Ashita me ga sametara
Hora kibou ga umareru kamo Good night!
The person who I love is faraway
Too faraway and I feel like crying
When I wake up tomorrow
Look, hope just might be born, Good night!
That “good night” just doesn’t fit with the English translation however it’s done. I wonder why it was put in.
There is a sense of longing in this verse, more obvious when she reaches the high(er) notes. Unfortunately, since the song is major, it creates a feeling of confusion and contradiction. Despite this, it does have an effect, though a weakened one.
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
Tomaranai no yo Hi!!
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
I won’t stop, Hi!!
The Engrish here is…..delightful. Here, the mood dies abruptly. It’s like almost-longing, but then Aya reveals her true colours. These lyrics are so, so, painful. Imagine an English song like that! Then again, it is Japanese. I should be kinder. And it’s quite cute. In a…little-girl sort of way. It seems strange to think that Haruhi sang this. Her voice is so deep and mature, too.
That “Hi!!” (I always thought it was “hey!”, but, who knows) is so amusing. It really enhances the childish effect. Maybe it’s meant to indicate that when people fall in love, they act like children. How interesting.
The guitar solo from the beginning is repeated exactly. It’s still impressive.
Nemuri no fuchi de Yume ga kureru omoide no One day
Anata no kotoba ni wa Sukoshi uso ga atta
In the depths of my slumber, my dream gives my memories a ‘One day’
And there were some lies in your words
The second verse!
More and more childish. >_> “And there were some lies in your words.” Sounds like an accusation, don’t you think? I’m beginning to sense traces of the anime here. Those rumours about Haruhi having known Kyon in the past….she’s thinking, one day, the events from my memories will be fulfilled. Maybe in the past Kyon lied to her and said, “I won’t let go” and “I’m only yours”. I am slightly doubtful of this. It’s true that Kyon is a two-timer, though. Look at him and Mikuru. Though, I can’t really blame him.
Hanasanai yo to kimi dake da to
Dakishimeta no ni
Yakusoku ga fuwari to kurai yoru ni kieta
Even though you embraced me
Saying, “I won’t let go” and “I’m only yours”
The promise softly disappeared in the dark night
Harmonies! The backing singers sound like mini-Haruhi’s, unlike the ones in Brand New Breeze from La Corda D’Oro. She probably recorded herself several times. They’re difficult intervals; yet she managed to get them perfectly in tune. Maybe it was computer-adjusted. No, it seems unlikely.
What beautiful lyrics! Again, reminiscent of Eternal Snow. Well. The pain.
Daisuki na hito yo itsumo
Itsu made mo sagashite shimau
Kitto me ga samete mo
Mada maboroshi o kanjitai Morning
I’m forever searching for
The person who I love
I’m sure that even when I wake up
I’ll still want to feel the illusion, Morning
The longing again. The lyrics confuse me. What illusion? The illusion of love? The illusion of the Morning?? Who knows.
I lost I lost I lost you!
You’re making making my music!
I lost I lost I lost you!
Mou aenai no? No!
I lost I lost I lost you!
You’re making making my music
I lost I lost I lost you!
Can’t we meet anymore? No!
I’m really impressed by these harmonies. They’re so difficult, and they really enhance the song.
Sadly, I can’t say the same for the pronunciation. The lyrics, however, are unfailingly amusing. The exclamation marks, and the way Hirano Aya answers all her own questions, serve to bemuse the listener. I think it’s really funny.
Again: “Can’t we meet anymore? No!”
I wonder how she sounds when she actually speaks English. On second thoughts, I really don’t want to know.
The same chords as the guitar solo from before, but this time they’re just held notes – a period of rest before Yuki really gets into it. The guitar solo this time is truly scary. I wonder how it’s done? Is it just random notes down the guitar?? After hearing this (and God Knows), I actually tried to teach myself guitar. On an acoustic guitar. I think the guitar solo from God Knows wouldn’t have sounded the same even if I had actually known how to play.
However, I don’t understand the purpose of this guitar solo. It’s like, a cadenza for the guitar, and it doesn’t add any meaning to the lyrics. Then again, I think we’ve already established that the lyrics just don’t fit the song. It is a student band after all, and their guitarist is overwhelmingly good. It’s understandable that they would want her to show off.
Daisuki na hito ga tooi
Toosugite nakitaku naru no
Ashita me ga sametara
Hora kibou ga umareru kamo Good night!
The person who I love is faraway
Too faraway and I feel like crying
When I wake up tomorrow
Look, hope just might be born, Good night!
A repeat of the chorus/whatever it is.
Daisuki na hito ga tooi
Toosugite nakitaku naru no
Kitto me ga samete mo
Mada maboroshi o kanjitai Morning
I’m forever searching for
The person who I love
I’m sure that even when I wake up
I’ll still want to feel the illusion, Morning
And a repeat of the second chorus/whatever it is. Can’t figure out whether this is the chorus or “Can’t we meet anymore? No!” is. Actually, I think the chorus just has two parts.
Aya does some cool improvising here. She changes one note. A sure hint that the song’s going to end soon. Oh actually, she changes two. How could I have not noticed that high E? She sounds quite strained. It really shouldn’t be a struggle for her; from her other songs, I know she can sing that high easily. Perhaps she’s worn out by all her “Hi!”’s and “No!”’s.
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
Tomaranai no yo
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
I won’t stop
The “hi!!” is omitted. Evidently they thought that it would cause false assumptions that the song was over.
I’ve noticed that as the song goes on, her vibrato has decreased! I wonder why?
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
Mou aeru yo ne? Ne!!
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
We can meet again, right? Right!!
Some nice chordal singing. I wonder, if she performed this live, which line(s) are pre-recorded and which are sung?
The leap to higher register indicates that it was supposed to be a big finish. It is, I guess. I can imagine it being performed then people will stand up and start cheering/clapping. I would. >_> Um.
I will ignore the lyrics.
I think that this song works very well if you don’t know what the lyrics mean, or you don’t care what the lyrics mean. It has an infectious beat and the frequent “hi!”’s, “ne!”’s etc. add to this. The harmonising is impressive, as are the guitar solos. It’s Yuki, after all. Overall, I really like this song, even though after analysing it, I am slightly disturbed by the lyrics. Oh well.
“When I wake up tomorrow
Look, hope just might be born, Good night!”
Because “hope just might be born” the next day, “good night” is one way of saying she can’t wait and will immediately retire for the night so that tomorrow (and therefore “hope”) will come quicker.
I like Aya Hirano’s song Lost my Music more than God Knows. That anime series was great.

I listen to a lot of folk-rock and pop-rock songs with sad and depressing lyrics, like They Might Be Giants and Barenaked Ladies, so I rather enjoy the musical irony of really happy-sounding sad songs. I find it odd that other people think it’s dissonant.
And the whole thing about Kyon meeting her in the past… well… that’d be a spoiler.
Aya Hirano ROCKS!! YAY!
d00d! Aya Hirano rocks! we dun need your stupid comments on how childish it is when it’s transelated to English!
Japanese is the best, not the English!
jeez, haleluiah to all rice crackers
x_X
well,i thing if we want to enjoy the song, just ENJOY IT! no need no analize the song as if it was an chemical reports that need to be analized!
you feel annoyed by the way they put the lyrics?well, for you to know, that IS the unique way to describe the feelings of the author!and that makes the japanese song different from americans or any other western song….
sorry for my bad english, but i think other peole will agree with me and d00d…we don’t need comments like that!!!
